Creative communications agency Embrace were commissioned to create a dynamic and energetic creative ad campaign for The Globe’s ‘Our Theatre’ youth production of the Seven Ages of Shakespeare working with local communities.
The Seven Ages of Shakespeare was challenging as it was conceptual since it featured a collection of speeches from different Shakespeare’s plays that reflected the concept of the Seven Ages of Man speech from As You Like It, known for the line: ‘All the world’s a stage’ .
We ran a series of design workshops for children participating. They were aged between 6 and 16 and the sessions gave them a chance to input into the creative process from brief to ideas to design.
We created the bespoke design workshop, using our own methodology to elicit feedback. Final designs were voted on with a consensus from both the education team and children alike, meaning everyone was very happy with final concepts.
The visual brand identity for the Seven Ages of Shakespeare showed the different life stages through the eyes of a child. Through the workshops, we developed the idea of a wall-chart to show a man’s growth while the change in colours from young to old was particularly specified by the children, who connected ageing with subdued colours.
To denote the different plays, we added the shadows of protagonists and marks reflecting different ages. The visual brand identities were rolled out across a range of brand assets including invites, e-vites, programmes, posters and T-shirts.
The design process this year really captured the participatory spirit of the project, honoured the young people’s ideas and brought a new level of learning
